How to Play Jhyap | Dhumbal : Tips and Tricks

Jhyap is an easy draw and discard game also widely known as “Dhumbal” in Nepal and “Yaniv" in Israel. Jhyap is a fairly simple game in which the objective is to have the lowest total value of cards in hand.

Objective

The goal is to have a hand of lowest points (at least less than 10).

Basic Terms

  1. Number of Players: The game is suitable for 2-5 players.
  2. Deck of Cards: one, consisting of 52 cards.

Hand Values in Jhyap

The score of a hand is the sum of the individual card rank.
Here,
- 2-9 has face value rank
- A is one,
- J is eleven,
- Q is twelve
- and K is thirteen.

For example, if you have a combination of K, Q, and A. Your total points is 26.

Gameplay

The main rule here is: you must throw cards before picking.

Dealing

Each player is dealt 5 cards. The remaining cards from the deck are placed face down in the middle. The top card of the deck is turned face up to start the pile.

You can throw a,

  1. Single Card: Any single card.
  2. Set of Same Rank Cards: Two or more cards of the same rank (e.g., 2♥️, 2♠️, or 2♥️, 2♠️, 2♣️).
  3. Sequence of Same Suit: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4♠️, 5♠️, 6♠️).

You can now pick a card from choice card (card thrown by previous player) or from the deck.

Jhyap

You can show when your hand score is less than or equal to 10. This player becomes the caller.

Winning in Jhyap

  • If the caller has the lowest hand score, the caller wins. Each losing player pays the caller an amount of coins equal to their hand score.
  • If another player has a hand score less than or equal to the caller’s score, that player wins. The caller pays the total sum of all players' scores to the winner.

Some tips and tricks to win Jhyap/Dhumbal:

  • Prioritize discarding high-value cards early to reduce your total score.
  • Pay attention to which cards opponents are discarding. This can give you clues about their strategies and help you decide.
  • Show your card at the right moment (when the total points equals to 10 or less).
  • Balance between discarding high-value cards to reduce your score and holding onto potentially useful cards.
